Wendy Waller OAM

20 June 2024

OAMs are awarded for service worthy of particular recognition. I cannot think of anyone more worthy of the award than former Mayor of Liverpool, Wendy Waller, who was recognised for her service to local government in the 2024 King's Birthday awards. A Cartwright resident for most of her life, Wendy was first elected in 1995 and served as mayor for nine years across two terms before retiring in 2021. Wendy was the first female Mayor of Liverpool and one of only a handful of women elected in some 100 years. Her experience made her a fierce advocate for diversity in political representation, and she contributed much to organisations like the Australian Local Government Women's Association. Wendy was a fearless leader who steered Liverpool through some of its greatest challenges. Her legacy is huge. She will be remembered for establishing the Liverpool Youth Council and especially for the stability she brought to our local area. I am proud to call her a friend, mentor and source of counsel. I send my sincerest congratulations to Wendy, her husband, Paul, and their family.
