After many years of struggle and sacrifice, on 20 May 2002 Timor-Leste finally gained independence. In honour of that the Timorese United Association, which represents the thriving Timorese diaspora in my electorate, kindly invited me to join them in their celebration of 21 years of freedom and democracy. The night consisted of an excellent display of cultural dance performances, a seven-course meal consisting of a variety of dishes from Timor-Leste, and live music from the talented community band Pop Orchestra. The Timorese United Association has been a pillar of the multicultural community in Liverpool for many years, advocating tirelessly for the interests of the Timorese diaspora and allowing Timorese families to connect with their heritage and pass on culture and traditions to their children. I sincerely thank everybody at the Timorese United Association, with particular thanks going to president Carlos Pereira and secretary Nidia Mendonca for their contribution to that wonderful event. I look forward to celebrating Timorese independence for many years to come.
