The last few years have been instrumental in shifting the dial on our community's appreciation of the importance of mental health. Often, however, the importance of ensuring the wellbeing and mental health of our elected representatives and decision makers is under-appreciated. Recently, the Apolitical Foundation produced Mere Mortals, a report on the wellbeing of political representatives. This report, the first of its kind, delves into the factors influencing the wellbeing of politicians and its impact on contemporary policy challenges. Researchers conducted surveys and interviews of current and former politicians to gauge the various impacts on their mental wellbeing and their capacity to perform their role effectively. Notably, the report highlights the current dehumanizing climate of politics, as well as the need for public recognition of mental wellbeing as a conduit for forging stronger connections between politicians and their communities. I was also interviewed by the Apolitical Foundation last year, where I shared insights about my own political journey and the pivotal role of mental wellbeing in managing relationships. I commend the Apolitical Foundation for their exploration of this under-researched topic and I look forward to the impact this research will have.
