In the words of Nelson Mandela, "education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". Recently, I had the honour of attending and addressing the St George Community Housing Strive Scholarship Awards Ceremony at the Casula Powerhouse. Students, parents and caregivers, and local service providers attended to celebrate the achievements and future goals of some very special young people. The Strive Scholarships assist students in SGCH properties with educational costs, and are used to pay for things like school fees, stationery, computers or extracurricular activities. Since their commencement in 2006, these scholarships have assisted thousands of kids. This year, 278 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 were awarded a Strive Scholarship, directing more than $229,000 of vital funds to those who need it most. It was fantastic to hear from Yasmine Zanzoul, a previous recipient of a Strive Scholarship who credits the program with helping her achieve her goals – and she is now teacher helping the next generation of young people to change their world. Well done Group CEO Scott Langford, and all the team at SGCH for the much needed work backing in our young people.
