Plate It Forward, a charity organisation, held a canape event at the Cobham Youth Justice Centre, which marked the conclusion of the Second Chance Kitchen program, which runs twice a year to provide young participants with hands-on experience in the hospitality industry under the guidance of industry experts. This year's guest chefs included John-Paul El Tom, Luke Powell, Ben Greeno, and Luke Bourke. Founded by Shaun Christie David in 2020, Plate It Forward has made strides in supporting vulnerable communities in Sydney, including refugees, asylum seekers, and people with disabilities. They have donated over 560,000 meals and ongoing employment to more than 200 individuals from marginalised backgrounds. Their mission is to create meaningful human connection through the universal love of sharing food. It was truly heartwarming to see the young people who participated in the program prepare and serve a sausage sizzle, kingfish ceviche, and butter cake, and to witness the support from their families. Food can be a powerful connector for building community, cultural exchange and creating opportunities for transformative change. I look forward to future progress by Shaun and his team to expand the program into other youth justice centres.
