This year, we marked Indigenous Literacy Day on September 4. It is a day to celebrate First Nations stories, culture and languages and sits within Literacy and Numeracy Week. I'm so proud to share that Liverpool had a special opportunity to grow the resources available to support literacy in the Darug language. I joined Go Go the Gecko and Paint Liverpool REaD at the new Liverpool City Council Library – or Yellamundie, which is fittingly the Darug word for 'storyteller' – to launch a brand-new bilingual story book, "Where is Bayagin's brother?" A beautiful book written and illustrated by Leanne Redpath, with Darug translation by Rhiannon Wright, "Where is Bayagin's Brother" is a perfect story for any child aged 0-5. The launch included a reptile display for kids who wanted to make a scaly friend. This fantastic new book will be available in libraries across Liverpool, and will make an enormous difference to Indigenous young people seeing their language and culture represented in our public spaces. I want to acknowledge Mission Australia for their continuing support of child literacy throughout Liverpool. I look forward to continuing to partner with you for the years to come.
