I recently had the pleasure of joining the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group for the thirty-second annual Mil-Pra exhibition and art prize at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre. The annual prize is an opportunity to recognise and understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through artistic expression. I was proud to sponsor two awards centred around the theme of "Building Bridges" to highlight works that enabled greater understanding of First Nations culture, tradition and stories, and encourage meaningful collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The Youth Award went to Lili Farrell from Picnic Point High School for her piece Turtle. It featured the turtle as a totem for Darug clans and reflected the turtle as a common symbol of resilience and wisdom across many cultures. The Children's Award went to the Bradbury Preschool Wombats Group for their collaborative projectThe Emu Egg Discovery Project: A Journey of Discovery. The project featured a blend of elements, highlighting the importance of knowledge, language and the profound interconnection between nature, culture and historical practices. I offer my congratulations to all of the award winners.
