Harmony Day is a time to celebrate what makes Liverpool such a wonderful place to live: our community's cultural and linguistic diversity. I joined the fantastic students and staff at Liverpool Girls High School for one of the highlights of their school year, their annual Harmony Day celebration. The day began with a flag ceremony, fashion parade, and concert involving students, staff and parents. Students sang, danced and shared their reflections on how they express their cultural identity and pride in their family history. This is just one of the many channels by which the students at Liverpool Girls can express and take pride in their culture. At a time when some would use the cultural differences within our community to sow division, I am so proud of the Liverpool Girls school community who stand strong and connected! The school is proudly home to students who speak over 65 different languages from every corner of the globe. I thank the students and the staff – ably led by Principal Kristine Gonano – for sharing their Harmony Day celebrations with me, and I applaud their dedication to a school environment that fosters inclusivity and celebrates diversity.
