South-west Sydney is lucky to be the home of so many Chilean-Australians. I joined with many in Liverpool's Chilean community last week to mark 51 years since the Chilean military coup d'état. On Wednesday 11 September I joined the community for a screening ofCrossing the Pacific: Chilean Voices in Australia, a powerful documentary that ensures we preserve the voices of Chilean‑Australians who lived through the coup d'état and subsequent persecution of many Chileans by the Pinochet regime. Many of that generation are sadly passing on. Unless we remember the cautionary lessons of history, we will repeat the mistakes of the past. I also attended a moving commemoration of the legacy of former Chilean President Salvador Allende—who was killed in the 1973 coup—at the Allende monument in Fairfield. Many Chilean-Australians still bear deep scars from the coup and the brutal dictatorship that followed. It informs their deep commitment to democracy, truth and justice. I thank those who have maintained the rage over the years. Por ustedes, nos sabe que Allende vive, ahora y siempre.
