On 10 October 1970 Fijians gained independence from British colonial rule, marking the end of a hard-fought freedom struggle and the beginning of a new independent and multicultural nation. Last weekend at Woodward Park in Liverpool I joined the community for Fiji Day celebrations where Fiji's rich heritage was on full display with stalls, music, rides, cultural performances, food and fireworks. The event showcased the vibrant community in Liverpool and attracted crowds from across south-west Sydney. We were joined by special guest, Minister Sashi Kiran, the Fijian Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, who spoke about mental health and support for diaspora youth in Sydney. With one of the largest Fijian communities in the world, Fiji Day is an opportunity to share and celebrate with each other. I extend my sincere congratulations to the event organiser, Sashi Lal, as well as all those involved in its success.
