Tonight I acknowledge and congratulate Councillor Ali Karnib on his long and distinguished career in local government. Last week's election saw Ali Karnib complete 29 years on Liverpool City Council—one of the longest serving in Liverpool's history. Ali was first elected in 1995. He was a former maths and science teacher, and president of the Lebanese Community Council for many years. Like so many in Liverpool, Ali and his family settled in Australia in pursuit of a more peaceful life. They arrived from Lebanon in 1984 and have since contributed so much to their new home. Ali settled in the Green Valley area and continues to call Busby home. As a councillor, Ali was known for his passion for the community and his sharp focus on the issues impacting the areas he represented. He served twice as deputy mayor, including his most recent tenure under Mayor Wendy Waller. I congratulate Ali Karnib on his many decades of service. I also note that Ali recently celebrated his seventieth birthday. Happy birthday, Ali.
