Recently, I joined members of the Assyrian, Armenian and Greek communities for the Commemoration of Assyrian Martyrs Day in Fairfield, which is marked annually. On the 7th of August each year, a Memorial Day is held for the tragic events of 1933 in Simmel, Iraq. This solemn occasion, organised by the Assyrian National Council of Australia [ANC], invites us all to reflect on the resilience of the Assyrian people and their steadfast commitment to preserving their rich cultural heritage despite ongoing challenges in Iraq and Syria. The ANC's mission, rooted in the Assyrian nation's historic quest for national and territorial rights, is to build institutions that ensure democratic representation and protect Assyrian freedoms for future generations, fostering lasting prosperity and well-being. Under the guidance of Miss Breteil Tigris David, President of the Young Assyrians, I am filled with find hope that the resilience and dedication to justice will transcend generations. Thank you to the ANC for hosting this meaningful event, allowing us to honour the memory of the Assyrian Martyrs. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of reflecting on the collective history and enduring strength of the Assyrian community.
