Catherine Cannuli

14 September 2023

Anyone who followed the Matildas' glorious World Cup campaign last month would recognise Catherine Cannuli. Catherine has long been a champion for women's football in south-west Sydney, fighting to create pathways and opportunities for talented girls and women—often pathways that she did not have access to. Last week I saw her passion and drive on full display as over 160 keen female footballers in the under-eights to under-12s divisions came together for the second annual Catherine Cannuli Cup. That is double the number of participants from the inaugural cup last year. Local public schools, including Cecil Hills Public School, Hinchinbrook Public School and Miller Public School, were all keen participants. Establishing an effective talent pipeline would not be possible without the efforts of people like Catherine and initiatives like the Catherine Cannuli Cup. I also recognise the efforts of volunteers and staff from Southern Districts Soccer Football Association, and teachers, parents and students from Bossley Park High School, who performed game leader duties on the day. I look forward to seeing the talented young participants reach their potential in the years to come.
