In 2023, approximately 64 women and 11 children were killed by intimate partners or family members. Tonight I rise to acknowledge the Candlelight vigil for victims of domestic violence held in Macquarie Mall in Liverpool. Organised by Bonnie Support Service, the Vigil is an annual commemoration of the women murdered every year at the hands of a violent partner. The vigil invited guests to reflect on the lives lost through a candle-lighting ceremony, tribute performances and by readingĀ out victim's names. Information and resource materials were also distributed at the event for those wishing to learn more about domestic and family violence. I note that intimate partner homicide is the most common form of homicide in Australia. Unfortunately, there is a spike in such incidents during Christmas and New Year, attributed to financial pressures, tensions around custody arrangements, family dynamics and increased use of alcohol or other substances. I commend Bonnies for continuing to hold this vigil every year, and I thank Executive Officer Tracy Phillips, the Board and the staff for the fierce advocacy and support they provide to at-risk women in South West Sydney.
