I acknowledge the Blue River Choir, a unique musical ensemble composed of female refugees from Bosnia and across the Balkans. The Blue River choir began in 1997, when choir conductor Sladjana Hodzic sought to showcase the vibrancy of the Balkans and Bosnia to audiences in Australia. The choir's repertoire includes traditional Bosnian Sevdalinka, arias from world operas and popular folk songs. A testament to the choir's inclusivity, the group incorporates Australian, Jewish, Arabic and other music styles into its performances and has a no-audition policy, which enables a diverse variety of members to join the ensemble. The choir has received a number of prestigious accolades, such as third place in the Australia Music Play for Life competition, as well as many media appearances highlighting the groups unique story and tremendous talent. I had the pleasure of seeing the choir perform earlier this month, where I got to meet its diverse ensemble and enjoy its riveting music. I extend my congratulations to Sladjana Hodzic and her members for their success over many years.
