Bella Ma grew up watching her grandfather and older brothers play ice hockey at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Rink. Just five years after joining in the fun herself, the Ashcroft High School student debuted for the Australian under-18s girls ice hockey team at the world championships in Scotland in 2023. At just 15, Bella has had a far from smooth path to the national team. To ensure she could take her place on the world stage, Bella's home club, the Liverpool Catholic Club Saints, set up a GoFundMe and organised fundraising events. Bella only received her first passport a couple of weeks before the tournament. After previously bringing home bronze and silver medals, the Aussies beat Latvia to bring home gold in Bella's first outing and for only the second time ever. I congratulate Bella on her achievements and on recently being named Liverpool Council's Young Person of the Year for 2024.
